What
You'll Need
- Several sizes of
boxes
- Packing tape
- Markers
- Bubble wrap
- Tissue paper
- Get special cartons
for mattresses, mirrors, pictures and table lamps
- Use wardrobe container
for clothes
How
to Start
- Begin packing few
weeks before your move date.
- Pack one room
at a time, labeling each box with a description of its contents
and its destination (e.g. kitchen, bathroom).
- Put heavy items
in small boxes to make them easier to carry. Keep the weight
of your boxes reasonable.
- Be sure to have
plenty of "filling" material available.
- Don't apply tape
directly to polished or painted wood finishes. Removing
the tape could ruin the surface.
- Double box fragile
items and add plenty of cushioning.
- Assign numbers
to all cartons. Create a list that indicates each number,
reveals box contents and noted which room it goes in.
- Always stack packed
boxes as close as possible to where the movers will park
the truck.
- Carry important
financial and legal documents, valuables, jewelry and medical
records in your person.
Packing
Special Objects
Larger
Appliances
- Be sure to check
the servicing needs of your appliances and equipment before
you move.
- Note the manufacturer's
name and model number of your refrigerator, freezer, microwave,
range, washer, dryer, portable dishwasher, window air conditioner(s),
etc.
- Make sure these
appliances are clean and dry. Mildew and moisture will harm
them.
- Place fresh coffee,
baking soda or charcoal in a sock inside to insure a pleasant
scent. Remember that refrigerators and freezers must be
empty when moved.
Automobiles
- Your car can be
shipped on a van along with your household goods or via
a third-party car carrier.
- Before shipping,
be sure that the gas tanks are no more than one-quarter
full.
- Don't use your
autos as containers for personal belongings, since those
items won't be covered by insurance. Also, the mover will
not be responsible for them.
- If you spot damage
to your car caused by shipping, you must note it on the
inventory sheet upon delivery in order to be eligible for
insurance coverage.
Computers
- Unplug your computer
and other electronic equipment a day or so in advance of
moving so they will be at room temperature on moving day.
Moving these sensitive items when heat is still retained
can cause internal damage.
- It's best if computers
are packed in their original boxes. If these are not available,
make sure to use a large, sturdy box and cover all components
carefully with plastic bubble pack or Styrofoam peanuts.
- Give the computer
a day or so to get used to its new room temperature before
plugging it in.
Plants
- Moving plants
successfully requires special attention to the following
factors:
- Temperature. Most
often, it's the wrong temperature that kills a plant. Since
their travel temperature varies, try to minimize it. Make
your houseplants the last to load and the first to unload.
- Water. Moisten
them slightly before the move.
- Light. They will
need to adjust to their new environment. To make a smooth
transition, keep them out of direct sunlight for a few days.
Packing.
- Consider plastic
pots. They are lighter and less likely to break than clay
or stone. Also, use a wax or plastic-lined container that's
about an inch or more taller than the plant. A side opening
makes it easier to pack and unpack.
- Try horizontal
boxes for hanging plants. For cushioning, use nonabsorbent
material.
- Finally, mark boxes
